The International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), honored Southwest Florida?s own golf legend and local Bradenton resident, Tony Jacklin CBE, a double Major Winner and the most successful Ryder Cup Captain in history, as the Guest of Honor and Honorary Award recipient, at a banquet following the International Golf Travel Market, held this year in Vilamoura, Portugal, in November 2012.
Carlton Carugati, General Manager, at IAGTO, told a group of international golf travel writers prior to the gala banquet, ?Mr. Tony Jacklin is the IAGTO guest of honor this year and is being recognized for his services to golf as well as being the catalyst for making the Ryder Cup what it is today. Alongside these accolades, it?s also the contribution that Tony Jacklin?s golf course designs are making to golf tourism destinations on different continents across the globe. We recognize the fact that our industry is totally dependent on the popularity of the game of golf and so we were delighted back in 2000 to be able to present our first Honorary Award to Arnold Palmer. Since then we feel privileged that Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Robert Trent Jones Jr, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, Annika Sorenstam, Jose Maria Olazabal, Nick Price, Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance have all accepted our Honorary Award, either in person or occasionally recorded in advance on video.?
Established in 1997, IAGTO?s membership comprises 2,044 accredited golf tour operators, golf resorts, hotels, golf courses, receptive operators, airlines, tourist boards, approved media and business partners in 88 countries, including at its core, 479 specialist golf tour operators. It is estimated that IAGTO?s member operators control over 85% of golf vacation packages sold globally with a?turnover of more than $1 billion each year.
IAGTO?s Chief Executive, Peter Walton, added, ?The annual golf holiday is the highlight of the golfing year for many of the world?s 50 million players, and the IAGTO Awards serve to reward a few exceptional contributions to this world of golf travel. The Awards also serve to encourage private and public sector organizations to work closely together in the development and promotion of new and existing golf destinations, making them accessible to and enjoyable by the widest range of golfers. Each year we recognize the performance of three of the world?s leading Golf Resorts, the flagships of our industry, together with one outstanding golf destination in each of the following five regions: Asia & Australasia; Africa, the Indian Ocean & the Gulf States; Latin America & the Caribbean; North America; and Europe.
?There is also a highly coveted award for the Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year, which is voted for by members of the International Association of Golf Travel Writers (IAGTW), with over 180 member golf travel journalists from 35 countries, including the USA?s iGolfTravelNews.com. Last year the awards were extended beyond resorts and destinations to include a new Outstanding Performance award for other categories of golf tourism suppliers, including golf clubs, hotels, transportation companies and ground handlers. The ceremony culminates in the presentation of our Honorary Award in tribute to the achievements of one extraordinary individual.?

That old business adage that ?you are only as good as the people you surround with? rings so true with the repeated successes of the annual International Golf Travel Market (IGTM).?Reed Travel Exhibitions and Landmark Media combine forces and organizational talent to make Peter Walton and his International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) management team shine brightly front and center every year and this year?s International Golf Travel Market event hosted at the Tivoli Marina Hotel in Vilamoura ? Algarve, Portugal ? was no exception.
Without Reed Travel Exhibitions and Landmark Media?s attentative?team orchestrating the convention, IGTM would be just another ho hum tired old travel industry trade show. Reed has greatly perfected the speed-dating meeting appointments revolution taking hold in the trade show and conventions industry today. Every meeting and business encounter at the International Golf Travel Market?is pre-programmed through buyer and seller delegate access to online appointment request diaries before the official opening. Exhibitor resorts and golf destinations can request appointments with golf tour operators and golf tour operators can request appointments with golf travel suppliers.
The origins of Reed Exhibitions can be traced back to?1966?when?IPC?purchased a stake in?US Cahners Publishing?and its exhibition portfolio. IPC was acquired by Reed International in 1970 and over the next 15 years, Reed and Cahners continued to grow their exhibition business in the US, Asia and Europe through acquisitions and mergers,?becoming Reed Exhibition Companies in 1986.
With the purchase of?Miller Freeman Europe in 2000, Reed Exhibitions became the?world?s largest exhibition organizer. In the decade since, there has been a strategic shift in emphasis towards the growth markets of China, Latin America, Russia and the Middle East, fuelled by joint venture partnerships and the leveraging of market-leading Reed brands. Reed?s first major presence in?China?(Reed Huayin) was established in 2003, followed by Reed Sinopharm in 2005 and Reed Huabo in 2007. In 2007 Reed also acquired Alcantara Machado in?Brazil, making it the #1 exhibition event organizer in Latin America.
Reed?s Chairman & CEO is Mike Rusbridge with an exhibition industry career spanning 30 years, taking him from sales executive with Clapp and Poliak (1978) to Managing Director of Cahners Exhibitions Ltd (1982), President of Reed Exhibitions Europe and Asia (1994) and Chairman of Reed Exhibitions worldwide (1996).
Fiona Ashton is Reed Travel Exhibitions? Marketing Manager for the?International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) and holds the same position for the annually held Arabian Travel Market (ATM).
Landmark Media is one of the golf?industry?s top Public Relations agencies. Established in 2003, Landmark works with golf businesses and golf industry brands to secure valuable coverage in influential newspapers, magazines, on television and online outlets across the key golf markets of North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia.
Manuela Whittaker, Landmark?s Business Manager?at their UK HQ, summarized the Landmark business model for this golf travel writer, ?We are the leading golf marketing communications experts for world-class golf courses, golf resorts, golf residential communities and golf destinations. Landmark Media has proved successful in generating reputation building media coverage for our clients for one simple reason ? directors Gary Firkins and John McKenzie are experienced golf journalists and have inside knowledge of how the media works.?
Reed and Landmark are already hard at work planning and preparing?for?next year?s International Golf Travel Market which is being hosted on the Costa Daurada ? Spain?s ?Golden Coast? November 11-14, 2013. Located one hour south of Barcelona and just 15 minutes from Barcelona Reus airport, the Costa Daurada region will showcase its sandy beaches, quiet villages and stunning countryside, as well as its cultural and historic attractions, first-class culinary offering and, of course, its luxurious golf and leisure resorts.
Calle Carlsson, General Manager of LUMINE Golf & Beach Club, part of the LUMINE Mediterr?nea Beach & Golf Community, said: ?The IGTM represents a unique opportunity for the Costa Daurada region to develop strategic business relationships whilst showcasing the product to an engaged audience. It is vital for the region to demonstrate how its diverse product already attracts golfers from established markets, but also how the on-the-ground expertise, quality of product and service as well as the commitment to facilitating the business process will encourage operator partners to send its clientele to the region.?
With an array of golf courses designed by such noted architects, including Robert Trent Jones Jr, and golfing greats, such as Greg Norman, Jose Maria Olaz?bal and Bernhard Langer, the Golden Coast has all the ingredients to establish itself among Europe?s leading golf destinations.
The region?s first golf course, Costa Daurada Golf Club, opened in 1983, setting the scene for a further seven venues, including one of the main players in this pocket of Spain, the Bonmont Terres Noves Golf Club and the latest addition to the region?s golfing portfolio, the critically acclaimed LUMINE Golf & Beach Club, managed by international experts, Troon Golf.
?Spain has been a popular venue for IGTM over the years, however this will be the first time it will be held in the North Eastern region of the country. Over the past couple of years, Costa Daurada has embarked on a focused drive to establish Spain?s ?Golden Coast? as an emerging golf destination, as, we believe, it has the potential of becoming one of Europe?s premier golfing hubs? commented Peter Grimster, Exhibition Manager of IGTM.
