Unnerving Instagram-Street View smashup built with best intentions

35 min.

"If you don't want it to be shared or seen by the entire world,"?Abe Stanway explains,?"you shouldn't share it with anyone at all." The 22-year-old?engineer is part of a small team that built a site which shows anyone exactly where an Instagram photo was taken.

The site, called the Beat, takes advantage of the Instagram and Google Street View application programming interfaces (APIs) in order to create a strange mashup of the two services. All a user has to do is search for a keyword and Beat will spit out results in the form of photos with geotags?? embedded geographic data?? and a look at the Google Street View location corresponding to that information.

Through some simple?keyword searches, I found that it's?possible to easily?discover where a girl with a large?pile of yet-to-be-opened gift boxes from Tiffany's resides, where a family is spending its summer vacation (and which hotel's bar the father favors), where a man with an impressive gun collection lives, and so on. Someone with a plan???malicious or otherwise???and some time on his or her hands can easily compile a wealth of data on strangers. (Is it any surprise that at least one tech reporter?has wondered if Beat is a "creepy" use of technology?)

Of course, what Beat does isn't an absolute novelty. In the past we've seen apps and services ? such as one named "Creepy"?or another dubbed "Please Rob Me"?? which easily gather?geographic data from services like Flickr, Twitpic, Instagram, Foursquare and so on.?Thanks to these apps and services, and smartphones which have the ability to add geotags to photos and social media posts, there's plenty of information lingering out there.

"People want to share, people sometimes want to share publicly," Mor Naaman, an?assistant professor at Rutgers University whose research group built Beat, told NBC News. "But they still want to retain privacy." He sounds certain that both desires can coexist.

Naaman's research group consists of?Abe Stanway (who also spoke with NBC News), Ian Jennings?and Jerry Reptak???current and former Rutgers University?undergrads. For them, Beat is just a small part of what Naaman describes as a "much larger project," one which focuses on collecting, organizing?and showing relevant information online.

"Social media forgets a lot about what's happening in real life, what's happening out there, what people do, what they care about," Naaman explains. Stanway says if aliens were looking at Earth or a city on Earth, "What would they want to know? [...] What would be their passport to figure it out?"

By giving photos context?? location?? Beat can show you the ... well, beat,?or rhythm,?of any place or topic.

As Beat flashes images of valuables and their locations across my screen, Naaman's words seem too gentle for the potential danger they convey.

"I?think people should continue to share," he says. "I think it's interesting and critical [...]?but I would also like them to think about the consequences."

(AP) ? NBC unwrapped a welcome gift in the final week of 2012, a ratings victory powered by Sunday night football.

More than 30 million viewers watched the Washington Redskins defeat the Dallas Cowboys and claim their first division title in 13 years, according to Nielsen Co. figures released Tuesday.

The NFL contest drew the biggest audience in 16 years for a regular-season prime-time game, second to a 1996 Packers-Cowboy contest, NBC said.

The network, making a comeback after a string of lackluster seasons, ranked No. 1 in total viewers and in the advertiser-favored young adult demographic for Dec. 24-30.

In a week that TV typically surrenders to the holidays, CBS captured half of the top 10 slots with repeats of reliable series including "The Big Bang Theory." The Kennedy Center Honors special also performed well for CBS, drawing 8.2 million viewers to claim the 13th spot.

For the week overall, NBC averaged 7.35 million viewers in prime time (4.3 rating, 8 share). CBS was second with 6.6 million viewers (4.3 rating, 7 share), while ABC had 3.97 million (2.3 rating, 4 share), Fox had 3.95 million (2.3 rating, 4 share), the CW had 990,000 (.6 rating, 1 share) and Ion had 1.15 million (.8 rating, 1 share).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with an average of 3.36 million viewers (1.6 rating, 3 share). Telemundo had 1.1 million (0.6 rating, 1 share), TeleFutura had 1 million (0.5 rating, 1 share), Estrella had 220,000 (0.1 rating, 0 share) and Azteca had 90,000 (0.1 rating, 0 share).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.1 million viewers (5.9 household rating, 11 share). ABC's "World News" was second with 8.3 million (5.4 rating, 10 share) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.2 million viewers (4.8 rating, 9 share).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For Dec. 24-30, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "NBC Sunday Night Football," NBC, 30.3 million; "Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kick," NBC, 21.9 million; "The OT," Fox, 17.8 million; "Football Night America (Part 3)," NBC, 15.9 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 12 million; "Person of Interest," 10.33 million, CBS; "60 Minutes," CBS, 10.27 million; "NCIS," CBS, 9.8 million; "NBA Christmas Special," ABC, 9.6 million; "NCIS Los Angeles," CBS, 8.6 million.

Macau casino revenue in 2012 rose to $38 billion - seattlepi.com

HONG KONG (AP) ? Casino revenue in Macau climbed 13.5 percent last year to a record $38 billion, as the Asian gambling hub reinforced its position as the world's biggest gambling market.

Gross revenue from Macau's 35 casinos also hit a monthly record in December, rising 20 percent to 28.2 billion Macau patacas ($3.5 billion), according to data posted on the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau on Wednesday.

But gambling revenue growth eased off in 2012 from the year before, when it rocketed 42 percent to $33.5 billion, as China's economy slowed and wealthy mainland Chinese gamblers held back amid fears about a crackdown on corruption.

Analysts noted that the decline in Chinese high-rollers, who account for two-thirds of Macau casino revenue, has been offset by growing numbers of middle-class Chinese.

Chinese gamblers account for the bulk of visitors to Macau, a former Portuguese colony that returned to Chinese control in 1999. The semiautonomous region, an hour by ferry west of Hong Kong, is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.

Despite the moderating growth, casino operators have pushed ahead with expansion plans in Macau, where companies such as Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Wynn Resorts Ltd. earn the bulk of their profits. Some 90 percent of Sands' profit comes from Asia, including half from its Macau properties.

In October, MGM received approval to build a $2.5 billion casino resort, its second in Macau, while local operator SJM Holdings received land approval to build a 2,000-room hotel with 700 gambling tables. Earlier, Sands said it plans a Parisian-themed resort that would be its fourth casino project while Wynn unveiled plans for a $4 billion resort.

The new projects, which are expected to start opening by mid-2015 at the earliest, will be centered around the Cotai Strip, an area of reclaimed land between two islands that is modeled on the Las Vegas Strip.

Macau's economy has boomed since it ended a four-decade casino monopoly in 2002. Gambling revenue there has now swept far past Las Vegas, where growth has been flat in recent years as the market has matured. Las Vegas revenue totaled $6.1 billion in 2011.

No fuel sheen, no sign that hull is breached

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? Officials say two aircraft that flew over an oil drilling ship that went aground off an island in a severe Alaska storm have not seen any signs that the vessel is leaking fuel or that its hull had been breached.

Federal on-scene response coordinator Capt. Paul Mehler says the rig is aground but appears to be stable on Tuesday.

When the storm eases and weather permits, the plan is to get marine experts onboard the Kulluk to take photos and videos, and then come up with a more complete salvage plan.

The Kulluk is carrying 150,000 gallons of diesel and about 12,000 gallons of lube oil and hydraulic fluid. The rig ran aground Monday on a sand and gravel shore off an uninhabited island in the Gulf of Alaska.

Be honest...

I see a lot of people, mostly younger men and women who seem to just bounce around from one relationship to the next. They will be in a relationship with one person for a few months or maybe a few years and have a breakup and then immediately they are fixated on getting their next new relationship up and running again. Many of these people are never satisfied in the relationships they are in, but they don't seem to take the time to give themselves room to breathe between relationships and just enjoy the single life, if they even can.

Do you feel like you NEED to be in a relationship to be happy? I have spent 90% of my teenage and adult life single (I am 26), and very content, but perhaps I am the minority?

Everyone is different and has a unique perspective, so lets hear your story...

Your whole post simply reinforces the point OP is trying to make...
Many people (and yes mostly younger I have noticed too - it seems as people get older they realize that a relationship is not essential to being happy, but still there are some older people I know with the same mindset) "have" to be in a relationship to be fulfilled. I was like that, but eventually I realized I needed to be comfortable and confident with myself first before jumping into a relationship, and once I was, I found someone amazing. If you need a relationship to be happy you are going to simply have troubles in the relationship as you are using it as a crutch for your emotional support. A relationship is supposed to be the "icing the cake" but not the point of life. And viewing it as something you "need" will always end with misery, usually jealousy / possessiveness / staying with an abusive partner or one who is just not compatible and feeling miserable because you are terrified of not being in a relationship.

You have to be comfortable, confident, and happy with yourself / accept yourself before looking for a relationship. If you don't, it will just bring issues into the relationship. It happens all the time and happened to me all the time until I finally realized what was going on, why the patterns kept on repeating themselves, and why my relationships were failing.

Theres a fine line. Im completely confident in who I am, and am more than capable of spending time alone. However I still.....on stormy nights.....wish I had someone to hold, love, and to share lifes burdens with.

A relationship and union between two people is allot more than a glucose rush....or ICING ON THE CAKE

Its a sacred bond that was created by the good Lord himself so that we may tackle life's challenges....together? :Awemazing:

Sure one can be alone, but you are lying to yourself if you think you're above the common folk who seek that other half to complete them. Sure I can SURVIVE in the harsh world, alone and untouched, but do I want to?

Im all for not being a codependent ass to your partner and using that connection in order to escape lifes harsh realities. But I still think there are some very distorted, egocentric views going on in this thread.

The way I see it

:morningtoke:>:bunny:

If that makes sense :strokebeard:. I think we got a badass on our hands, not someone who is genuenly trying to help our fellow shroomerites

No. I need to be in touch with people and to take care of them to be happy, but a romantic relationship would be something I just wouldn't know how to handle. I can't imagine how I would behave in it, or what my partner would be like. I don't want to live up to any girl's expectations of what a man should be like, I just like being this person I am, even if most "normal" people consider me insane.

I would say that whether you're wasting time in a bad relationship, or facing the world alone, we all struggle. It's a right of passage that we must go through at one point on the path to becoming mature. Some people get there earlier, some later and some never get there. After about 30, age is just a number.

I feel that getting married or attached at too young of an age dampens your perspective. Going through heartbreak and loneliness will force you to build inner strength. It's important to find a partner who also has that inner strength and maturity. That I feel, is necessary for a healthy sustainable relationship.

Yeah, seriously.? All the guys on here complain that women play mind games, meanwhile being completely different people around women, playing the same damn games they're complaining about.

Me and my girl are always ourselves around each other, completely straight up, and it's the most amazing, non-dramatic relationship I've ever experienced.

The person who I really am is kind of indifferent towards women and sexuality, for now. I value close friendships a lot more - they are more meaningful to me emotionally and intellectually. But all this might change.

Well arnt you just the unique individual! Enough air up there on your high horse as you try to look down on others who would rather share the burden of life than be a SUPPER DUPER UNIQUE LOANER WHOM IS SATISFIED WITH WANKING????
