Explosive attack on Kenya church kills 1 child

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The acting police chief in Kenya's capital says an explosive device set off in a Sunday school class killed one child and seriously wounded three.

Moses Ombati said he suspects sympathizers with the Somali militant group al-Shabab were behind the attack at an Anglican church in Nairobi.

Kenya has seen a series of attacks on churches ever since Kenyan forces moved into Somalia to fight al-Shabab last year. Kenyan forces kicked the rebels out of their last stronghold, Kismayo, on Friday.

Grenades are often used in the attacks; Ombati is describing the cause of Sunday's attack as an explosive device.

One church member, Julius Macharia Maina, brought four children to the hospital. One child's head was cut open; the others had bruises. Maina described the attack "emotional and very scary."

'Looper' takes audiences on a thrill ride

Sony Pictures

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "Looper."

By Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: "Looper" is a clever, entertaining science fiction thriller that neatly blurs the line between suicide and murder. An existential conundrum wrapped in a narrowly conceived yarn about victims sent back in time to be bumped off by assassins called loopers, Rian Johnson's third and most ambitious feature keeps the action popping while sustaining interest in the long arc of a story about a man assigned to kill the 30 years-older version of himself.

A lively, high-profile choice to open this year's Toronto International Film Festival, this Sony release co-starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the same role should chalk up sizable returns in the wake of its Sept. 28 theatrical bow.

VIDEO: "Looper" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt on getting kicked in the head by Bruce Willis

Probably the shakiest aspect of Johnson's original screenplay is what it asks the viewer to buy about the future: A mere 62 years from now, in 2074, time travel has become possible, but such a momentous breakthrough is limited to serving as a body-disposal system. Under the prevailing authority, time jumping is strictly outlawed because of its potential for messing with history. A large criminal mob, run by an overlord called The Rainmaker, defiantly uses it but only as a vehicle for assassination, with ?loopers? -- disreputable gunmen living in 2044 -- laying in wait for people to execute so no bodies or other evidence can be found in the future.

Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt chat about playing a younger and older version of the same character in "Looper."

But the premise is established in nifty fashion; the doomed, hooded with hands bound behind them, suddenly materialize in an empty field, and the looper immediately blows him away with his blunderbuss. One such executioner is Joe (Gordon-Levitt), a retro-looking hipster who drives a very old red Miata and wears ties, ?a 20th century affectation? that offends his crankily genial boss, Abe (Jeff Daniels). If he can get out of this racket, he says he'd like to go to France, which earns him further scorn from the older man; ?I'm from the future, you should go to China,? he scolds.

PHOTOS: Movies with different actors in the same role

Backed by a cynically confessional voice-over track from Joe that is not as self-consciously hardboiled as the commentary Gordon-Levitt read for Johnson in "Brick" seven years ago, Looper?mostly is set in a seedy metropolis that doesn't look all that different from sketchy neighborhoods in some big cities today; there are derelicts, bombed-out buildings, ruined cars and enough other signs of urban ills to suggest that, in Johnson's view, things will just gradually decline over the next three decades.

Joe hangs out in clubs, sees a sexy woman (Piper Perabo) who works in one of them and tries to help a friend and fellow looper, Seth (Paul Dano), who's imminently endangered by a new development that's come down from on high: They're ?closing all the loops,? meaning they're sending the ?future selves? of all the loopers back to be killed.

Almost immediately, Joe is in the same jam. When, a half-hour into the film, he goes to the field to do his next job, the guy who pops up to be shot is not hooded. Joe's hesitation allows the older man to escape, and it's clear who he is: It's Joe as his older self. And, for his failure to kill him, young Joe is in a pile of trouble with Abe and his ?gats,? first-class hired guns.

STORY: "Looper" interactive trailer reveals new interviews, behind-the-scenes footage?

When the two Joes finally sit down -- across from each other in a diner in the middle of nowhere -- there's no doubt they're working at cross purposes: Young Joe is determined to kill his older self, while old Joe is dead set on tracking down and taking out The Rainmaker, who would be a little kid in 2044, so his late wife won't die at his hands after all.

The biggest problem facing the makers of "Looper" is how to make the audience believe that the trim, long-faced Gordon-Levitt could somehow change so much in 30 years that he would look like the thicker-built and shorter-nosed Willis. The solution lay in altering the younger actor's appearance, imperceptibly at first, but gradually to morph his dark eyes into Willis' gray-green and to reshape his nose and eyebrows, either with makeup or digitally or perhaps both. At first, the effect is a bit odd, and you can't quite put your finger on what's off; then it feels downright weird to be looking at a version of Gordon-Levitt who is no longer the actor you've known for a few years now.

This is especially noticeable during the film's second half, much of which takes place at young Joe's place of refuge, the isolated home of feisty young farmer and single mom Sara (Emily Blunt), who has an unusually gifted son, Cid (Pierce Gagnon). Even as the temperature is kept at a low simmer, the film's pace deliberately is slowed here to develop some intimacy between these two isolated people and give some screen time to the kid, who pretty obviously will provide the reason for old Joe to eventually head for the farm. The eventual ending is great, the resolution to the tricky time maneuvering very impressively worked out.

VIDEO: "Looper" trailer puts Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a tough spot: Killing Bruce Willis

Shot mostly in Louisiana, with a bit done in Shanghai, the film looks tightly made on a budget but sacrifices nothing for that; the world depicted looks dirty, dangerous and ramshackle, with a few high-tech touches here and there.

Their physical disparity notwithstanding, Gordon-Levitt and Willis both come across strongly, while Blunt effectively reveals Sara's tough and vulnerable sides. Daniels is particularly amusing as the garrulous old enforcer holding down the future's outpost in the past.

'Hotel Transylvania' Reviews, Green Day, No Doubt & More: The ...

Another week, another round of unimpressed critics.

"Hotel Transylvania," "Won't Back Down," "House at the End of the Street" and "Taken 2" were among the offerings that didn't exactly earn stellar reviews. (Lest you think these folks hate everything, "Looper" and "Pitch Perfect" fared much better.) These movies all faltered in different ways, providing a number of lessons for aspiring filmmakers and Hollywood heavyweights alike.

In music, it was a rough week for genre-defining titans. Both Green Day and No Doubt's latest efforts were met with a lukewarm reception, though No Doubt seemed to be on the receiving end of the harsher criticism. Why so serious? Turns out folks found No Doubt's disc to be a bit on the empty side, all production and not much heart. As for Green Day, the band's evolution into a corporate favorite -- Billie Joe Armstrong's public meltdown and stint in rehab notwithstanding -- has alienated fans who remember their punk days. Lupe Fiasco's message-heavy album didn't exactly make much of a positive impression either.

Peep all the reviews below. As always, let us know who you think missed the mark.

  • 'House At The End Of The Street'

<em>The New York Times</em> was not a fan: <blockquote><a href="http://movies.nytimes.com/2012/09/22/movies/the-house-at-the-end-of-the-street-with-jennifer-lawrence.html">Once the action kicks in, ?House at the End of the Street? turns into a choppily edited, poorly timed mess with little continuity, overloaded with aural shocks in a desperate attempt to compensate for its minimal suspense. </a></blockquote>

  • Green Day's '?Uno!'

Andy Gill of <em>The Independent</em> breaks down Billie Joe Armstrong and friends: <blockquote><a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/album-green-day-uno-reprise-8163413.html">This, the first salvo of a 3CD campaign that will see two further albums released by mid-January, finds Green Day's devotion to the most basic of rock formats resulting almost inevitably in some of the dullest music released all year.</a> </blockquote>

  • Lupe Fiasco's New Record

The Guardian dispatched Lupe's album thusly: <blockquote><a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/sep/27/lupe-fiaso-food-liquor-review">Fiasco is not without skills or beliefs, but neither are as refined as his self-regard.</a></blockquote>

  • Tadanobu Asano, Taylor Kitsch

"Battleship" returns for DVD release. The film was not kindly reviewed when it debuted: <blockquote><a href="http://thecrat.com/movie-reviews/battleship-review-by-adam/">You can?t ?get? a film like Battleship. It?s not satire, it doesn?t play on two levels like Starship Troopers, it?s just shit. Still, I almost encourage you to seek it out. As a piece of miscalculated, American wankery, it is almost unparalleled. Consider this one Sunk.</a></blockquote>

  • 'Taken 2'

Writing in <em>Time Out</em>, Tom Huddleston panned Neeson's thriller sequel: <blockquote><a href="http://www.timeout.com/film/reviews/92047/taken-2.html">?Taken 2? is a cynical, contemptuous film whose sole reason for existing appears to be to squeeze the pockets of anyone who enjoyed the first movie. Don?t give it the satisfaction.</a></blockquote>

  • 'Won't Back Down'

This film seems like a really good try: <blockquote><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/movies/wont-back-down,1213163/critic-review.html">The one-step-forward, two-steps-back nature of collaborative reform doesn?t lend itself to a climax featuring plucky heroes wearing green and big bad union guys wearing red. Writer-director Daniel Barnz choreographs that sequence to maximize nail-biting and stirring emotion. But by that time, ?Won?t Back Down? has become so didactic that viewers are likely to feel less uplifted than lectured.</a></blockquote>

  • 'Hotel Transylvania'

The children's movie did not impress Newsday's Rafer Guzman: <a href="http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/movies/hotel-transylvania-review-horror-not-so-funny-1.4043212"><blockquote>"Hotel Transylvania," a 3-D animated feature in which Count Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) manages a resort for persecuted monsters, feels like a string of jokes without a story. That might be better than the other way around, but this Sony Pictures Animation production ends up feeling less like a children's movie and more like a disposable summer comedy.</blockquote></a>

  • No Doubt - 'Push & Shove'

No Doubt seems to have lost their way, according to the <em>Boston Globe</em>: <blockquote><a href="http://articles.boston.com/2012-09-25/arts/34035857_1_push-band-foursome">It?s not a matter of everybody fighting for their own ideas at the group?s expense; just the opposite, in fact, as it sounds like every last detail was worked out through numbing compromise. The band has rarely sounded this faceless, with the indiscriminate, locked-in sheen of a producer-driven act instead of the fused idiosyncrasies of a supposedly inspired foursome.</a></blockquote>

Militants attack Iraq jail, free prisoners

TIKRIT (Reuters) - Militants attacked a prison in the Iraqi city of Tikrit late on Thursday, freeing dozens of inmates and clashing with security guards in the surrounding area, security sources and an eyewitness said.

The prison, which housed several hundred inmates, many of whom are suspected of links with al-Qaeda, was attacked by unidentified gunmen following a car bomb explosion outside the main gate.

"Until now, the prison is in the hands of the gunmen. We are raiding them from time to time, but are faced by their fire," said one security source, who was participating in efforts to regain control of the jail.

The number of escaped prisoners was not yet clear.

A curfew was imposed on the city, once home to now-executed former president Saddam Hussein.

Iraq's conflict has eased since its height in 2006-2007 when sectarian slaughter killed thousands. But Sunni Islamists and an al Qaeda affiliate still launch regular attacks, seeking to destabilize the country and undermine its Shi'ite-led government.

Prison breaks are not uncommon in Iraq. Last September, 35 prisoners facing terrorism charges escaped via a sewage pipe from a temporary jail in the northern city of Mosul, an al Qaeda stronghold.

Yes. I am reading 50 Shades of Grey. Part 1. | AMNAR

Yesterday, I finally caved in. I decided to read 50 Shades of Grey.

?WHY?? I hear all the sane readers with taste demanding.

Well? because I?m really curious about it. This isn?t just an ?everybody?s reading it? thing, either. It?s become The Feminist Issue In Literature, and I?ve seen a lot of opinions on it. I?ve seen a lot of toing and froing about the book, and I?ve even heard about it being burned because it?s apparently responsible for brainwashing women somehow.

I?d like to have an opinion on the book. This is partly because I?m a woman, partly because I?m a feminist, and partly because I?m a human being. I have to admit, I am massively curious about what could outsell Harry Potter on such an epic scale. If you?d asked me what could do that so easily, I?d have answered ?porn?. But nobody asked.

Now, I don?t usually read porn. Or watch porn. Or take much of interest in porn. I?m sure I?d have more readers if I did. I have put sex scenes in my own books, but for the last while I?ve had anhedonia, which is gives you the sex drive of the average rock. Stonehenge has more interest in it right now.

I don?t know if that gives me more or less insight, but I suppose I could consider it a challenge. Mostly, I think if something is being discussed that much, especially explicitly saying it has an impact on women and their lives (which is often what you read in reference to 50 Shades), then I should probably pay attention.

I?ve also decided I?ll give it a bit of a review when I?m done. It means that when somebody launches into an opinion starting with the line ?I haven?t read it, but?? I?ll be able to reply with slightly more insight than a rock. Because really, you can?t start out with a detailed opinion on something if your opening line is ?I haven?t read it, but??

You?d think that was in the Basic Book of Rules, but uninformed opinion is often the bedrock of humanity?s discussion of everything these days. I think I?d rather sit on the side of the fence with the people who investigated and thought about something a bit before leaping to a conclusion.

Now, before I talk about the book at all, I have to say this. One of the major criticisms from feminists, and women generally, is that 50 Shades paints a portrait of a dysfunctional, abusive relationship without clearly qualifying that such relationships are A Bad Thing for women. Unfortunately, they also add that this is a woman?s fantasy. Now, I?ve read Robin Ince?s Bad Book Club and as a result I know there is a book of women talking about their fantasies that included a woman who fantasised about being raped by a donkey. No, I?m not kidding you. Yes, I will wait while you go and find out more about that.

So let?s start by saying at least this massively popular book is not about a woman who wants to be raped by a donkey. Not that this is necessarily wrong. Fantasies, sexual or otherwise, are exactly that: they?re fantasies. I get the impression that both 50 Shades and Twilight, the book that inspired the series, are essentially fantasies created by the authors who wrote them. Would that I had such popular fantasies. Mine are all sadly non-sexual and largely dragon-based.

This is where I wade into difficult territory because a lot of angry women will shout at me saying I?m approving of rape, abusive relationships and domestic violence. I?ve not got that far along in the book, but apparently the relationship described is a violent one and goes beyond the bounds of what real life BDSM relationships are like. I?ve seen it claimed that this will somehow make domestic violence more acceptable, or that all women who?ve read 50 Shades will conclude that in real life, they want a Christian Grey who treats them the way he treats Anastasia.

I?m afraid I?d need evidence to prove that. I grew up on an odd combination of epic fantasy (Lord of the Rings etc) and horsey books. Based on my reading of fantasy, you?d think I?d have grown up thinking that there are only four women in the whole entire world, that one of them is a hobbit, and two of them are elves. I have no idea what I might have concluded from the horsey books, but it probably might end up worryingly close to the whole donkey thing.

I dislike this idea that women are such a blank canvas that we can?t make conclusions of our own about what we read. Amazingly enough, I can read books that don?t clearly state in capitals that what?s contained within might be Bad For Me, and not think that I must live my life in that way. I have a brain. As I understand it, we base most of our conclusions on what relationships are about from our parents and the people around us when we?re children.

In search of something that might give me an idea of what readers think, I had a look at the Amazon page for 50 Shades. At the moment of writing, there 4588 reviews on the site. 1477 are 1-star reviews, and 1954 are 5-star reviews. A glance at the 5-star reviews produced a lot of joke reviews, including a drinking game based on the repetitive nature of the language. I wouldn?t recommend it, because even at my current place in the book you?d need a new liver.

There are people who genuinely liked it. They were totally hooked, apparently. I?m not sure I can conclude from that they intend to go out and allow themselves to be abused by men. Many of the genuine reviews appear to be quite clear that they understand that this is a fantasy, and not an instruction manual. The word ?escapism? appears a lot.

I?m going to get a fuck-ton of stick (if anybody reads this) for not clearly being angry about domestic violence in all its forms. I am against domestic violence. I honestly think what we?re facing here is not a tide of idiot women fooled by a book into thinking rape is great but society maybe having to face the fact that we 1. have sexual fantasies; 2. those fantasies are weird and seem unhealthy in the cold light of day and 3. are able to distinguish between those fantasies and reality. I suspect a lot of the hoopla is down to the fact that women and what women think about often don?t chime with what critics and opinion-makers wish they were and thought about.

So now I?ve written over 1000 words trying to come up with a position on the book when I?ve only reached chapter four. I?ll have to start reviewing in the next post. Damn.

U.S. carbon tax could halve deficit in 10 years: report

WAHSINGTON, Sept 26 (Reuters Point Carbon) - Imposing a $20 per metric ton carbon tax in the U.S. could reduce the country's budget deficit by 50 percent over the next 10 years, a report by the Congressional Research Service said on Tuesday.

Such a tax would generate approximately $88 billion in 2012, rising to $144 billion by 2020, the report said, slashing U.S. debt by between 12 and 50 percent within a decade, depending on how high the deficit climbs

The U.S. budget deficit has exceeded $1 trillion annually in each fiscal year since 2009, and could rise to between $2.3 trillion and $10 trillion by 2020, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

Since deficits can lead to reduced savings, higher interest rates and higher levels of inflation, reducing them is a high-priority issue in Washington.

The concept of using a carbon tax to combat the problem has been floated in Congress this year, but it comes with many potential downsides, the report added.

For example, households would face higher energy bills because utilities forced to pay the tax would likely pass the costs onto consumers.

"Lower-income households, in particular, would face a disproportionate impact if revenues were not recycled back to them in some fashion," the report said.

Returning money to consumers would mean fewer funds available for cutting the deficit.

And unlike a cap-and-trade system, where the government would set a hard limit on the amount of CO2 that could be released into the atmosphere, a carbon tax could not ensure a specific environmental outcome, the study said.

The likelihood of Congress passing such a measure would be limited, given the opposition of many Republican lawmakers to any type of tax increase.

Despite the odds, some politicians in Washington continue to promote the idea.

Former Republican Congressmen Sherwood Boehlert and Wayne Gilchrest joined Democrats Henry Waxman and Ed Markey to support a carbon tax in February.

In July, former Republican Congressman Bob Inglis launched a think tank to promote a plan to raise taxes on fossil fuels while cutting income tax, a concept previously supported by former Democratic Vice President Al Gore.

Democratic Congressman Jim McDermott last month introduced a Managed Carbon Price (MCP) bill to cut and put a price on carbon emissions, while returning some money to consumers and using the rest to reduce the deficit.

A Content Marketing Mind for Social Business - PR 20/20

Without content, social media is all talk.

As businesses bring the benefits of social solutions inside their virtual walls, content serves to create more meaningful conversations?and a lot more value.

Social Business, Enterprise 2.0, Enterprise Social, Collaborative Organizations: these terms all work to describe the movement toward integrated, internal platforms and tools that better engage, connect and simplify the work-lives of employees.

The ultimate goal is to achieve tangible business results and competitive advantages. Benefits include, but certainly aren?t limited to:

  • Streamlined communications
  • Cross-functional collaboration
  • Improved information access and multimedia publishing
  • Enhanced camaraderie across large and/or geographically dispersed workforces
  • Stronger sense of company culture through social media features, profiles and online communities

As marketers know in the external sense, online communities don?t exist without willing and able participants. Coincidentally, participation is a key performance metric for organizations investing in enterprise social solutions.

Social business is big, and its success hinges on the same metrics important to external social media and content strategies: education, engagement and action.

The following overview is designed for corporate marketers and agencies to elevate the performance of existing solutions, solidify your role in the future of social business, and help make the case for businesses considering enterprise social.?

It?s evident that corporate marketers have the opportunity to take content marketing to new heights through internal programs: from blogs, to wikis, to multimedia publishing and social networks.

Whether the executive team, IT, HR or multiple divisions are driving the initiatives, all involved must ensure the new platforms and communities are viewed?and used?as resourceful and collaborative tools.

Enter content, both existing and potential, at the heart of these complex solutions, serving as concrete assets that can be measured and evolved over time.?

Think about the ability to launch, test and refine content marketing campaigns prior to external deployment, with the power of the organization behind you.

The opportunities in content and community on the corporate side are about as vast as the concept of social business itself:

  • Author and thought leader Don Tapscott (@dontapscott) shares the causality and potential of the new open world in his June 2012 TED talk: ?To me, this is not an information age. It's an age of networked intelligence, it's an age of vast promise.?
  • Peter Kim (@peterkim), co-author of Social Business by Design, established the term ?social business? in 2009, as it applies today to ?Enterprise 2.0? marketing and technology strategies. In his post The definition of social business, he states, ?social business stands for what companies need to become?not a description of an incremental feature or business function.?
  • Amber Naslund (@ambercadabra), The Now Revolution co-author and president/co-founder of SideraWorks social business consultancy, highlights Key Business Challenges And How Social Business Helps. She says, ?Social business puts education at the core of any initiative, because without it, nothing takes root or scales.??
  • Jacob Morgan (@JacobM), author of The Collaborative Organization, clearly states the roles and opportunities for marketing teams for launching and nurturing collaboration tools in the enterprise. The post includes excerpts from his book with case studies.
  • BlueGlass Interactive co-founder and CMO Chris Winfield (@chriswinfield) shares an excellent and holistic look at how content can impact all corners of an organization.
  • Pam Moore (@pammktingnut) also offers 28 Attributes of Good Content Marketing to Rock Your Social Business.

The opportunities are here today, but note: the transformation from corporate communications professionals to internal content strategists will not happen overnight.

It takes a collaborative approach, driven by those dedicated to the health of the culture, and those with the marketing savvy to manage communities and deliver the content that educates and empowers users.

Sound content marketing and social strategies are built on the understanding of audience pain points. The following are common pains among employees, along with the content marketing tactics to consider.

Email Overload

Enterprise social solutions help decrease the reliance on email, and instead enable real-time messaging, notes, news and resources?either broadcast to the full network, or organized within strategic groups. Employees can choose when and how to access information.

  • Manage internal blog(s) for the organization, either corporate-wide; by department or function; or special interest, such as community involvement.
  • Enhance your internal newsletter or enewsletter with real-time, multimedia features, which encourage feedback and sharing.

Cultural Disconnect

An enterprise social network can forge stronger work relationships, encourage peer-to-peer communications and add elements of fun to the workplace. It can also be a great conduit for launching branding initiatives, or for responsiveness in a crisis.

  • Produce and publish video or podcasts from executive leadership on corporate vision, important news or responses to critical situations.?
  • Showcase career profiles in the form of case studies for long-term employees, and introduce new employees for inclusiveness in the company culture.

Remote Work

For mobile employees and virtual teams, social solutions keep staff members engaged and up-to-date. They also enable workers to stay connected, and efficiently share and archive resources.

  • Create slide presentations or webcasts on specific topic areas, recorded and available for on-demand access to the group.
  • Launch specialized groups for review and recommendations of external content and customer-facing pieces for internal testing and feedback prior to deployment, especially as they applies to different markets.

Professional Development

With a private network, the company has the ability to share knowledge, conduct internal training exercises, support peer mentorship, and connect employees with the resources to grow their careers.

  • Promote and publish internal educational ebooks, training workshops, webinars, HR handbooks and other files for simple access and archive.
  • Host presentations, podcasts or Q&A sessions with leaders on topics related to innovation, leadership and career growth.?

Corporate Silos

Enterprise social solutions are designed to remove communication and information barriers to help the organization operate as a unit. In this case, content can be the glue that solidifies the value of collaboration across functions, demonstrating how each piece fits together to keep the company moving forward.

  • Support cross-departmental communications with monthly updates or video interviews with division leaders on news and major projects, as well as long-term vision and further opportunities to share knowledge.

"The Resistors"

Individuals that aren?t convinced on the value of social technologies must be presented with quality content early and often, to demonstrate that internal social platforms are more than virtual water coolers. The more frequently they access and share resources, the sooner they will realize the time-saving potential, over the time-wasting perceptions. They may even become more supportive of external social initiatives and personal networking in the process.

  • Conduct open projects to produce internal whitepapers or ebooks, based on the crowd-sourced ideas and collective expertise.
  • Open opportunities for participants to build their reputations as influencers, leaders and contributing team members through guest posts and feature articles.
  • Ask the community what content they find most useful and get to work!

No longer limited to the confines of an intranet or physical office space, social business offers limitless opportunities for creativity, growth and brand building. And it?s just getting started.

Corporate marketers who foresee their value in this emerging landscape, and take the initiative to apply their skills and experience, have the chance to create meaningful contributions to their organizations and careers.

Sports New Media Secures IMG Investment Based On Its Syocial Platform

Screen Shot 2012-09-24 at 14.18.07Sports New Media (SNM) is something of a curiosity. Combining both media management and a technology platform, it works with athletes, sports agents, sporting associations and sport governing bodies to manage their social media activity, especially on Facebook. SNM has become one of the few Facebook Preferred Marketing Developers in part because its platform, Syocial, allows it to manage, moderate, analyse and publish to over 100 million fans across thousands of Facebook pages. So it's a sort of hybrid agency, but it's somewhat more than that, since Syocial can be used by any business as well. And now IMG, the global sports, fashion and media company says it has acquired a minority equity stake in SNM (terms were not disclosed). IMG Worldwide is a global sports, fashion and media business, operating in 30 countries around the globe.

Puyallup Fair changing name to become Washington State Fair in 2013

The Puyallup Fair has announced that it is in the process of changing its name to officially be called the Washington State Fair, effective when the trademark paperwork is completed in 2013. The fair, which first started in 1900, is the largest in the state, and has been a September tradition for several generations.

Many people already consider the Puyallup Fair to be the unofficial state fair in Washington. It has been the largest fair in the state for over half a century, officials said. The 4-H State Fair and the Washington State FFA Exhibition house their annual state competition at the Puyallup Fair, a hallmark of most state fairs in the nation. In the case of 4-H, students compete at the county fair level, with winners moving on to the state finals in Puyallup.

"The board of directors did their due diligence before moving forward," said Kent Hojem, CEO. "They weighed the pros and cons, and conducted market research to see what both locals and newcomers to the state felt about the name options. Overwhelmingly, their positive support of the name change impacted our decision to take the next steps in a name change."

While the name may change, the Washington State Fair will continue to offer the traditional favorites that have made it a family favorite since 1900. The foundation of the fair when it first started focused on animals, agriculture and education, and those elements remain strong features in the current fair.

The name change also streamlines the process of acquiring grandstand entertainment and national sponsors, fair officials said. Until now, it was necessary to explain the magnitude of size and attendance, explaining that Washington does not have a state fair. Now the focus can be placed on the benefits of the Washington State Fair, they said.

Congress seeks clarity from election for agenda

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A frustrated Congress quit Washington on Saturday with at least one hope ? that the stark choice in the election ahead will give lawmakers clarity about what Americans want from their government.

They desperately need some direction.

Lawmakers will return in about seven weeks and face a crowded list of must-do items, topped by avoiding what's become known as the fiscal cliff: the combination of expiring George W. Bush-era tax cuts and automatic spending cuts that could drive the country back into recession.

Two years of rancor and a divided government resulted in one of the least productive, least popular Congresses in history.

"I literally get on a plane with a baseball hat and hope to God nobody knows who I am because they're just going to yell at me," two-term Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., said Friday as lawmakers prepared to flee the Capitol.

The election presents two competing philosophies. President Barack Obama and Democrats envision a government with enough resources to help lift up the less fortunate. Mitt Romney and Republicans see one that gets out of the way, allowing people to make the most in an opportunistic society.

The presidential election of 2008 and the congressional contests of 2010 contradicted each other.

"The electorate has sent us, has sent the country two very different messages over the last two elections," said freshman Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C. "They elected the most liberal president in a long time and then the most conservative group to the House of Representatives two years later. That is the conflicting message."

The upcoming election ? "You sort of look at this as the tiebreaker," Mulvaney said.

Voters on Nov. 6 will chose a president and decide control of the House and Senate. Republicans say a Romney victory, an increase in their House majority and a majority in the Senate would be a mandate to begin making the changes embodied by the budget of Romney's running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, in their postelection session.

Ryan's spending blueprint remakes Medicare, reduces personal and corporate taxes, targets spending on safety-net programs for the poor and drives down the deficit to a manageable level. Republicans insist it is the only way to get a country deep in debt back on track.

The election choice, says freshman Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., is a "huge philosophical difference. It is based upon will America be a constitutional republic or will it be a socialist, egalitarian, welfare nanny state. I think the choice is pretty simple."

If the election restores the status quo ? an Obama win, a Democratic Senate and a Republican House ? Democrats are optimistic that the GOP would be more willing to compromise, with establishment Republicans prevailing over the wishes of their tea party brethren.

"We shouldn't have to wait for an election for the two sides to come together," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. "But for the Republicans, it just might do the trick."

Even the most hidebound lawmaker wouldn't want the alternative, said Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt.

"Do people want to slog through four more years of dysfunction?" Welch asked. "I think even members of Congress have their limits."

Over the past two years, the Republican-controlled House and Democratic-led Senate struggled for consensus on what had been easy in previous years, such as legislation to fund transportation projects. Just over 173 bills became law, far less than the 383 in Obama's first two years, when Democrats held Congress, and less than the 460 in the last two years of Republican Bush's second term with a Democratic Congress.

Lack of activity isn't the only reason for the lower production. House Republicans eliminated plenty of feel-good resolutions and measures such as those honoring sports teams.

Based on days worked, Congress has been in session 287 days, compared with 286 in Obama's first two years. Lawmakers are expected to return Nov. 13 for several weeks of work.

The to-do list is long in addition to the expiring tax cuts and the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts of about $110 billion that kick in Jan. 2 to defense and domestic programs.

Congress much deal with the five-year farm and nutrition bill, which sets policy for farm safety net programs and funds the food stamp program. Also unresolved are a defense policy bill, cybersecurity legislation and legislation to lift Cold War trade restrictions on Russia, now a member of the World Trade Organization.

But for all the possibility of clarity and compromise in the lame-duck session, the bitterness is still prevalent. House Republicans point to the numerous bills that went nowhere in the Senate.

"Look at how many bills this House has passed over to the Senate that are critically important to this country only to see them languish in complete ignominy by the Senate," said Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz. "For them to suggest it's a do-nothing Congress is a fundamental indictment of the Democrat leadership in the Senate. ... The Senate is where things go to die in this environment."

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., blamed Senate Republicans for filibustering legislation. He said it was difficult to accomplish anything when the Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky had said his goal was to make Obama a one-term president.

The choice, Durbin said, rests with the voters.

"Decide what you want," Durbin said on the Senate floor Friday. "Decide if you want to send Democrats and Republicans to this Capitol with an awesome responsibility and also with a spirit of consensus and cooperation."

HBT: Ex-Pirates owner McClatchy comes out as gay

Former Pittsburgh Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy sat down with Frank Bruni of the New York Times recently and spoke for the first time publicly about his sexuality. He?s gay, and like many people, especially public figures and especially people in the world of professional sports, McClatchy?s time in the closet was difficult, trying and unsatisfying in many, many ways.

But being away from the day-to-day of professional sports since selling the Pirates ? and finding himself in a stable relationship ? have eased his mind and improved his life. ?And about that stable relationship?

For their contentment they have Rick Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania, to thank. They were fixed up by someone who worked for Santorum and whom McClatchy first got to know through his professional interactions, when he owned the Pirates, with Santorum?s Senate office.

That?s probably the best thing ever.

Though really, we can?t undersell how being away from the Pirates has likely improved his life too. That place is a misery factory.

What's it like to fly a plane with shuttle on top?

(AP) ? It's the ultimate piggyback ride: A space shuttle perched atop a Boeing 747 as the pair crisscrosses the country.

For three decades, this was how NASA transported shuttles that landed in the California desert to their Florida home base. But it's coming to an end.

This week, four pilots took turns flying a jumbo jet mounted with space shuttle Endeavour on a multi-leg journey bound for Los Angeles where it will go on display in a museum next month.

With the shuttle fleet retired, it's the final ferry mission for a group of highly specialized aviators. The elite pilots over the years have included former astronauts, including famed pilot Gordon Fullerton.

Scores have asked what it's like to haul a 170,000-pound shuttle.

"That's a tough thing to answer," said pilot Jeff Moultrie, who will be in command when Endeavour performs an aerial tour over several California landmarks Friday. "What do you tell somebody? It's different. It's unique."

That's for sure.

For one thing, there's the noise. It is decibels louder inside the shuttle carrier aircraft compared with a commercial airliner because the interior is hollowed out to keep it as light as possible. Aside from a few seats, there are no galleys, overhead bins or even air conditioning.

In case pilots forget they're carrying precious national cargo, the constant vibrations from above jolt them back to reality.

Pilots have to be more careful when they make turns, but otherwise, the 747 handles like a regular plane. They also have to be hyper-vigilant about the weather because moisture can damage the shuttle's delicate tiles.

Built for American Airlines, NASA acquired the aircraft in 1974 and used it for test flights from Edwards Air Force Base in California's Mojave Desert and ferry flights to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It obtained a second one in 1990, but it was retired earlier this year.

The four current NASA pilots who can operate the modified 747 are ex-military aviators who split their time flying other planes including zero-gravity aircraft and T-38 supersonic jets.

Even when the shuttles flew routinely, a cross-country lift wasn't always needed. To keep their skills polished, they flew practice flights every several weeks and trained in a simulator twice a year.

Moultrie, who served as a commercial pilot for a decade, said he looked forward most to soaring in close to the Hollywood Sign. Even Angelenos have to keep their distance from the famed sign, which is surrounded by a fence.

"It's bittersweet," he said of the final mission. "We definitely feel privileged to be a small part of history. But on the flip side, we're sad."
